UMF in an acronym for 'Unique Manuka Factor' which is the term given to the antibacterial property present in Active Manuka Honey. The UMF standard is a system that measures the antibacterial strength of Manuka Honey. UMF is an antibacterial activity that is not present in any other type of honey. Research has shown that Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 or higher helps the body’s own defence in a synergistic way.
UMF Manuka Honey is tested and rated for its antibacterial potency. It is generally accepted that Manuka Honey with a UMF rating of 10 or higher is appropriate for therapeutic use. The higher the UMF rating, the higher the antibacterial activity. Some reports have indicated that certain individuals can experience sensitivity to Manuka Honey with an extraordinarily high UMF rating (i.e 20-30). Therefore, the optimal UMF rating for therapeutic use is between 10-16.
Manuka Honey contains two activities: Peroxide Activity and Non-Peroxide Activity. Peroxide Activity derives mainly from hydrogen peroxide and is commonly found in most honey. Non-Peroxide Activityis denoted by Unique Manuka Factor and is found only in Active Manuka Honey. There is also evidence that these two components may have a synergistic action.
Not all Manuka honey contains this special antibacterial activity. The UMF guarantee means that you can be sure that Manuka honey with the UMF mark on the label contains the special antibacterial activity.
The term "UMF" is a registered trademark of the UMF Honey Association (UMFHA) in New Zealand.
